ALAIN
BOUBLIL's first musical, La Revolution Francais in 1973, marked the
start of his collaboration with Claude-Michel Schonberg and became the
first-ever staged French rock opera, playing to capacity audiences and
selling in excess of 350,000 double albums. His idea of writing a musical
version of Les Miserables brought them together again in 1978 and the show
was written over a two-year period. Mr. Boublil co-produced a concept album
of the show, which became a hit before the acclaimed production opened
at the Palais de Sports in Paris in September 1980. In 1983 Mr. Boublil
made his first entry into London musical theatre with Abbacadabra at the
Lyric, Hammersmith, and worked closely with the writers and directors at
every stage of the British adaptation of Les Miserables. His personal commitment
to the production has continued with the London cast recording, which
quickly went gold. The NY production of Les Miserables won him two
Tony Awards in 1987 for Best Score and Best Book and a Grammy in 1988 for
Best Original Broadway Cast Recording, which he co-produced with Claude-Michel
Schonberg. Alain Boublil' s latest work, Miss Saigon, again in collaboration
with Claude-Michel, opened on September 20th 1989 at the Theatre Royal,
Drury Lane in London (where it continues in its 6th year) and on April
11th 1991 in NY (where it is now enjoying its 5th year). The show is also
touring the USA as well as playing in Tokyo and Toronto. Future productions
are scheduled for Sydney, Australia and Stuttgart, Germany. Mr. Boublil
maintains a close association with all international productions of Les
Miserables and Miss Saigon while, at the same time, writing with Claude-Michel
the screenplays for motion picture versions of both musicals. Their new
stage musical, Martin Guerre, opened in London in July 1996 and is currently
booking to January 1998.
CLAUDE-MICHEL SCHONBERG is a successful record producer and
songwriter who began his collaboration with Alain Boublil in 1973, writing
the musical score for the very first French musical, La Revolution Francais.
Mr. Schonberg played Louis XVI in that production and also co-produced
the double gold record album of the show. In 1974 he recorded an album,
singing his own compositions and lyrics, which included the number one
hit single "Le Premier Pas." In 1980, after two years work on the score,
Les Miserables opened in Paris, where it was seen by more than half a million
people. The recording was awarded two gold discs in 1981. In 1983 Mr. Schonberg
produced an opera album in Paris with Julia-Migenes Johnson and the Monte
Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra. Since working on the London production of
Les Miserables and co-producing the gold
London cast album as well as the Grammy Award-winning Broadway cast
album, Mr. Schonberg has been involved in the casting of all of the American,
Japanese, Australian and future productions of Les Miserables. In 1987
Mr. Schonberg received two coveted Tony Awards, for Best Score and Best
Book, for the Broadway production of Les Miserables. He also worked closely
on the newly-released symphonic recording of Les Miserables , whilst preparing
Miss Saigon, with Alain Boublil, their latest musical which is running
in the West End, on Broadway, in Tokyo, Toronto and on a US national tour.
Mr. Schonberg has recently scored symphonic suites for both Miss Saigon
and Les Miserables and he and Mr. Boublil are now completing work on the
screenplays for motion picture versions of both shows. Their new stage
musical, Martin Guerre, opened in London in July 1996 and is currently
booking to January 1998.
