Overlapping Your Boxes
Integrating the Music Curriculum

  • Making It Work / Soliciting Cooperation
    • It will take a commitment from the faculty
    • Every area of study needs to be involved
    • Every teacher needs to "overlap" in his/her classroom, studio, and rehearsal hall
    • Every teacher needs to be an example
      • Show an interest in areas other than your own
        • Classroom teachers attend studio and ensemble performances
        • Applied teachers attend Theory and History Lectures
        • Everyone attend composers' concerts
      • Know your stuff
        • Be ready to answer students' questions outside your field
        • ...or know where to find the answers
      • Step beyond your comfort zone
        • Classroom teachers -- perform
        • Performers -- give lecture recitals
        • Conductors -- give verbal program notes
        • Composers -- perform; lecture
    • If we want our students to be "complete" musicians and scholars, we must
      • Offer them the opportunities
      • Be examples for them and
      • Expect it of them
