Responsory
In the Roman Catholic rites, a type of chant
sung principally at Matins as a musical
postlude to a lesson. Since Matins includes nine lessons, it has
nine responsories, the last of which is usually replaced on Sundays and
feast days by the Te Deum. More than a thousand responsories are
found in 12th- and 13th-century manuscripts.
