Randall Thompson
Randall Thompson was an American, born in New York City in 1899, studied
theory at Harvard and composition privately with Ernest
Bloch. From 1922 to 1925 he was a Fellow of the American Academy
in Rome. His various teaching posts have included the University
of Virginia, Princeton, and Harvard. His most important work has
been done in the choral and symphonic fields, though he has also written
some admirable chamber music. In his production, three works stand
out: The Second Symphony (1931), The
Peaceable Kingdom (1936), and The Testament
of Freedom (1943).
