Heinrich Schenker (1868-1935)
An Austrian theorist whose system of analysis
has been influential in theory and composition. Schenker himself
was concerned principally with compositions of the
18th and 19th centuries, but his disciples, such as Felix Salzer,
have extended his theories to 20th-century styles. His works, all
published in German, cover a period from 1906 to 1935. "Structural
Hearing" (1952), by Salzer, is one of a number of English publications
dealing with Schenker's theories.
