Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612)
...flourished in the period that bridged the Renaissance
and the Baroque. He was a German who studied in Italy with
Andrea
Gabrieli, adapted the Venetian
style to the German Lied,
and created a strong German musical style. He wrote in all the current
vocal and keyboard forms, both Renaissance and early Baroque, but was best
known for his settings of German polyphonic songs and chorales.
