Sir George Grove (1820-1900)
Was an English historian, musicologist, and biblical
scholar whose fame as a writer on music was achieved with the "Dictionary
of Music and Musicians" (four volumes, London, 1879-89), a work
that has gone through many editions and revisions. The latest edition,
title "The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians"
(1980), was expanded to twenty volumes and utilized the latest in
research techniques and computer technology.
