Nicolas Gombert
Supposedly a pupil of Josquin, his motet style
exemplifies the Netherlands motet style of the period
1520-50: a continuous series of imitative
sentences with interlocking cadences, save for a single short contrasting
section in triple meter and fauxbourdon
harmonies; a generally smooth and uniform texture,
without many rests, with all dissonances carefully
prepared and resolved -- quite undramatic in effect as compared
with many of the works of Josquin, though not without a sensitive feeling
for the rhythm and general mood of the text.
