Luigi Dallapiccola
The
foremost of the modern Italian composers. He combined dodecaphonic
technique with Italian tradition vocal line in a very expressive fashion.
His masterful adaptation of the twelve-tone
system to lyrical expression is well illustrated in "Canti di liberazione"
(Songs of Liberty, 1951-1955), a set of choral songs, and in his opera
"Il Prigioniero" (The Prisoner). A number of chamber works employing
voice and instruments of various kinds are also noteworthy.
