Giacomo Carissimi (1605-1674)
An Italian composer, applied the new devices of the monodic
style to religious music, particularly the oratorio.
His masterpiece, "Jepthe," is a composition of the highest musical
and dramatic quality. He is regarded as the founder
of the oratorio.
